Glover Library to be Named After Student

Tony Swain was walking his little sister Charlique to Glover Elementary School September 2005 when a driver of a car ignored a crossing guard’s command. Tony pushed Charlique to safety. The driver never stopped. Tony was killed. The driver has never been found.
Tony Swain was the second youngest of five children. The sister he saved, now 19, studies nursing at Youngstown State University.
Glover Elementary passed out annual scholarships in his name for eight years, up until the fall he would have graduated. A year ago, Akron City Council passed the Tony Swain Law, empowering crossing guards to report drivers who put them or children in danger. The family was “very happy” to hear Tony wasn’t forgotten — that he’s “still having an impact on society.”
Last night, the Akron School Board presented the family with an honor in Tony’s name. Reverend Curtis T. Walker, Sr., board vice president, announced the learning resource
center at Glover Community Learning Center will be named the Tony Swain Learning Resource Center.
Rev. Walker’s presentation was to Tony’s sisters Charlique Swain and Cermisa Shropshire and their mother Lillie Swain.
